Dear His Excellency Mr. Ban Ki Moon,
The 40th anniversary of China’s seizure of the Paracel archipelago
I am writing on behalf of the 15588 signatories of the enclosed letter to forward it to your office.
The letter is regarding China’s seizure of the Paracel archipelago by force on 19 January 1974. That event is part of the territorial disputes in the South China Sea, which, if left unresolved, pose serious dangers to the region’s peace and stability.
In sending you that letter, we wish to call for the United Nations’ support in upholding the position that the sovereignty dispute over the Paracel archipelago must be resolved exclusively by peaceful means, and in encouraging the parties to that dispute to seek adjudication by the International Court of Justice. The letter has received 15588 signatories in the period of 9 days, from 11 to 19 January 2014, which indicates the strength of public support for it.
I hope that the United Nations will respond to our call strongly and in practical ways.
Le Trung Tinh
